Soccer Mentorship

What do you know about the game?

In the 11-a-side game, you spend more time without the ball then with it. What are you doing during that time?

Where to run, when to run, occupation of space, moving to create space, reading, anticipating, walking, running…

When you have the ball, each second is crucial to make the right decision.

Before we touch on that, let’s take a step back.

Are you good WITH the ball?

  • Passing – Can you execute good passes? Short and long? 1-2 combinations? (When I mean good passes, meaning passes with the correct weight, in the correct foot, in the right timing, if it is going to a teammate in movement, etc.)
  • Dribbling – Can you dribble past defenders? Are you comfortable in 1v1 situations?
  • First touch – Can you control the ball however it comes? Chest, thigh, foot?
  • Shooting and Finishing- Can you strike the ball in different ways? Laces, inside of the foot, one touch shots, shots with the ball coming from the air? Headers?

Technically speaking, there are already enough components to worry about. Not including the awareness and decision making required in the game of soccer.

If all of those aspects are still in development when you get to the 11v11 format (U13 and older), very likely you will be losing space in the game.

You are already touching the ball less, when you do it, are you able to choose what to do and DELIVER?
