TRAINING vs GAMES

What to focus on?

Where do you feel less pressure and work on things such as weak foot? Specific moves? More repetitions? Different game situations? Training.

When you are in competitive environments, you want to perform, there is more pressure and you don’t want to make a mistake. Normally, you will prioritize your dominant foot, which is totally fine. But where I am trying to get: you should be TRAINING more than playing multiple games on the weekend.

Sample training session focused in the individual technical abilities. Individual ball manipulation, attacking 1v1s, passing and shooting technique. Transition games and small sided scrimmages (2v2, 3v3).

Same athlete wore the tracker during on their games (7v7 format), which is typically two halves of 20 minutes.

More touches

When we are training younger age groups, what do you think the focus should be? Being on the ball more or less?

OUR DEVELOPMENT LOGIC:

  • Game format: Futsal and small sided games.
  • Unstructured play, play dates, scrimmages and guest playing every once in while.
  • Increase touches, learn fundamentals, develop the love for the game.
  • Transition to 7v7

(you don’t need to follow this)

US SOCCER DEVELOPMENT LOGIC:

  • Recreational soccer for 1, 2 years
  • Transition to playing competitive 7v7

We are not against games

Remember, technically speaking, all individual technical abilities are not as easy to be executed (outside pressure).

I didn’t even mention about the tactical aspect… rules, positions, formations, game understanding, moments of the game, where to go, understand space, etc..

Develop your toolbox.

By the way

Our development logic mentioned above is followed by over 20+ years of playing futsal and soccer in Brazil.
8+ years coaching in Brazil and USA, from grassroots to older age groups.
6+ years studying soccer, movement and human development.
